National Carillon, Klokkenspel in Canberra, Australië
The National Carillon is a bell tower on Aspen Island in Lake Burley Griffin, built with white concrete elements and hexagonal floor design. It stands approximately 50 meters tall and contains 55 bronze bells of different sizes.
The bell tower was presented as a gift from the British government to Australia in 1970 to mark the fiftieth anniversary of Canberra as capital. This gift symbolized the historical connection between Britain and Australia.
Regelmatige concerten houden de traditie van het carillon als muzikale kunstvorm levend. Deze uitvoeringen tonen hoe dit instrument nog steeds deel uitmaakt van het plaatselijke culturele leven.
Visitors reach the site via a footbridge connecting Kings Park to the island in the lake. The best time to visit is on days when concerts are scheduled so you can hear the bells perform.
A dining room with kitchen facilities is located in the upper section and can be rented for events, offering panoramic views of the lake and city. This hidden space is often overlooked despite offering an exceptional venue for special occasions.
