De bouw begon in 1352 onder Giovanni Enrico van Luxemburg en de consecratie vond plaats in 1356 in aanwezigheid van Koning Karel IV. Deze vroege stichting maakte het tot een belangrijk religieus centrum in het middeleeuwse Brno.
Het kerkgebouw huisvest kunstwerken uit verschillende perioden en fungeert als concertzaal, waardoor het zijn religieuze functie combineert met culturele evenementen. Dit dubbele gebruik laat zien hoe heilige ruimtes levend blijven in het stedelijk leven.
