Petaloudes

The Valley of the Butterflies is a natural area in Rhodes characterized by dense forests with sweetgum trees, small waterfalls, and ponds linked by streams. The terrain is crossed by paved pathways that allow visitors to move through the vegetation on different routes.

The valley became protected after the 2011 administrative reform that reorganized local governance in Rhodes. This transition marked a shift toward formal management of the site as a natural refuge.

Visit in early morning hours when the forest is quieter and the pathways are less crowded. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water, as rest spots are limited along the routes.

During summer months, thousands of a specific moth subspecies gather in dense clusters on tree trunks, creating a striking natural display. These mass gatherings attract photographers and nature observers who rarely encounter insects in such concentrations elsewhere.
