Het district strekt zich uit over 564 vierkante mijl land met de Kaskaskia River als noordelijke grens en Nashville als hoofdzetel.
Washington County scheidde zich op 2 januari 1818 af van St Clair County tijdens de administratieve reorganisatie van het Illinois Territory.
Het gebied trok begin 1800 veel kolonisten uit Kentucky aan, gevolgd door grote immigratiegolven uit Duitsland, Polen, Ierland en Engeland.
Het Gerechtelijk Centrum van Washington County, gevestigd aan 125 E Elm Street in Nashville, is geopend van maandag tot vrijdag van 8:00 tot 16:00 uur.
Het Lively Bloedbad vond plaats nabij Little Crooked Creek in 1813, voor de oprichting van het Washington County State Recreation Area in 1959.
